„Medicine is simple: it is to apply what you have learned with intelligence, being honest, humble and constant, in order to achieve the excellence and quality of treatment that patients deserve.“

Dr. Miguel Angel Martini is a specialist proctologist, a physician who deals with the treatment and diagnosis of diseases involving the colon, rectum and anus. His inspiration to become a doctor came from growing up with his father who also practiced medicine. In addition, another driving force behind his dedication to medicine was that he lived among renowned physicians in the United States, Canada and Guatemala during his youth.

Dr. Martini studied medicine at Francisco Marroquin University, and then continued with his specialty at University of Miami UM / Jackson Memorial Hospital  located in Miami, Florida. Additionally, he keeps up to date every year by traveling to congresses and courses of the „American Society of Colon and Rectum (ASCRS)“. During his career he has contributed to several medical publications and was president of the „Association of Colon and Rectal Surgeons of Guatemala“. He is currently president of the „Association of Surgeons of Guatemala„, reelected this year 2020 consecutively for the first time in the history of the association (founded in 1964), an experience that makes him unique in his specialty. In his role as president, he devotes considerable efforts to the education and updating of Guatemalan surgeons, both young and experienced.

Among the most common „anorectal“ conditions Dr. Martini treats are hemorrhoids. These annoying lumps are nothing more than swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum, and can be located internally or externally. For this reason, he practices many procedures in the clinic that avoid hemorrhoidal surgery in a large percentage called „internal hemorrhoid ligations and infrared photocoagulation“. In addition to his vast experience, he has a team of ligatures and photocoagulation hemorrhoids in the clinic. Likewise, throughout his career of more than 30 years, Dr. Miguel Martini has performed dozens of laparoscopic colon surgeries, helping in all pathologies both benign as large polyps or diverticula of the colon and malignant as cancer of colon and rectum.  Laparoscopy is a procedure to see inside the abdomen and pelvis with a camera, and if necessary, remove areas of the colon and join them or other intra-abdominal procedures that aim for a better visualization of the pathology and at the same time a faster recovery of the patient.

Dr. Miguel Angel Martini is a great expert in colostomy, a procedure through which an incision is made in the abdomen to join the colon with a bag and allow the removal of waste from the body, after surgery. This procedure is a resource that provides hope to those patients who are unable to eat due to some condition. Dr. Martini’s clinic has the latest generation of endoscopic diagnostic equipment, which allows the observation of the digestive organs by means of a camera at the end of a viewing tube. In addition, he is an expert in colonoscopy, performing about 450 a year. These allow the examination of the interior of the colon, analyze its functioning and remove polyps or perform biopsies of the lymph nodes as other modern procedures that seek greater recovery. Diagnose cancers in the large intestine, colon and the last portion of the small intestine. This is done using a flexible tube with a high-resolution fiber optic camera on the end.

Dr. Miguel Martini likes to practice the music therapy method and is always willing to see new patients, even if the patient has an appointment. He has the noble belief that he should always serve and never say no to a patient. In addition, a very important message he always conveys to patients is, never let time go by out of embarrassment, or assume that an ailment is something minor, as this can make a big difference, especially in the treatment of serious illnesses. Dr. Martini attends to patients at the Edificio Multimédica and his surgeries are performed at the Centro Médico, Hospital Herrera Llerandi, Hospital El Pilar, Hospital Universitario Esperanza and Hospital Multimédica.

„Everything can be achieved with effort, commitment, discipline, honesty and perseverance“
