Doctor's Profile

Dr. Guillermo Dorion is the gynecologist who is most trusted by local professional women and North American diplomats from the embassies in Guatemala City. Since he began his private practice in 1995, Dr. Dorian has successfully treated thousands of women through healthy pregnancies, serious cancer treatments, and the relief of knowing that the results of their annual exams are better than expected.

Some patients come to Dr. Dorion’s clinic at Hospital Multimedica when they suffer from endometriosis or uterine problems. Endometriosis is estimated to affect between 3% and 10% of reproductive-aged women, most commonly in their thirties and forties. Diagnosis is usually based on symptoms, in combination with medical imaging, but biopsy is the most definitive method of reaching a conclusion. Endometriosis can only be diagnosed by a doctor performing a laparoscopy and taking a sample of a suspected abnormality and requesting a pathology exam. Surgical removal of the endometrium may be the best solution to treat those whose symptoms are not manageable by other methods.

A Papanicolaou (Pap smear)  test, is a screening method to detect potentially pre-cancerous or cancerous cells on in the cervix. If the Pap smear shows suspicious cells or abnormal results, Dr. Dorion might use a colposcope to take a closer look. Colposcopy (kol-POS-kuh-pee) is a procedure to closely examine your cervix, vagina and vulva for signs of tumors or alterations in your reproductive organs. If he finds an unusual area of cells during colposcopy, a sample of tissue could be collected for laboratory testing (biopsy).

Digital breast tomosynthesis is far more effective at detecting cancerous breast tumors than the traditional mammography was. Conventional mammography is an uncomfortable procedure that gives a 2-dimentional picture on photographic film, the technology of our grandmothers. Digital tomosynthesis (pronounced toh-moh-SIN-thah-sis) creates a 3-dimensional picture of the breast, like a computed tomography (CT) scan.

The breast is positioned the same way it is in a conventional mammogram, but only a little pressure is applied — just enough to keep the breast in a stable position during the procedure. The X-ray tube moves in an arc around the breast while 11 images are taken during a 7-second examination. Then, the information is sent to a computer, where it is reconstructed to generate three-dimensional high definition images of the entire breast.

Dr. Dorian regularly attends international medical conventions to learn all about new technology and materials, to keep his medical practice at the vanguard of world-wide gynecological standards of quality. Dr. Dorian says, “Tomosythesis technology is safe, highly effective, and approved by the FDA, but still not in general use by most hospitals and womens’ clinics in the United States. My goal is to offer my patients a more comfortable procedure to facilitate the detection of breast cancer and give them the most reliable diagnosis that I can.”

For the comfort and safety of his patients, Dr Dorian performs advanced videolaparoscopic surgery in all areas of women’s reproductive health with the SILS method: Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery. The minimally invasive method allows for fast healing and very little discomfort. Dr. Dorian performs procedures only at the finest private hospitals in Guatemala City, where he is an established surgical associate.

Dr Dorian is professionally respected as a medical provider of the highest modern standards. More importantly, he is appreciated by the women who depend on him for his wisdom and kindness through a difficult diagnosis, routine exams, or the joy of expecting a new member to the family.
